Personalized Telehealth in the Future: A Global Research Agenda

The Telehealth Resource Centers (TRC) are funded to increase the use, efficiency, and raise awareness about telehealth through education and training. This Perspectives on Telepractice article provides an overview of the services offered by twelve regional TRCs, as well as the National Telehealth Technology Assessment Center (TTAC) and the National Telehealth Policy Resource Center (NTRC-P). It also provides suggestions about what more can be done by the federal government to maximize telehealth’s potential to address the needs of a strapped health system.

California Public Health Departments Remotely Treat Tuberculosis: Outcomes & Opportunities

The Center for Connected Health Policy (CCHP) and the University of California San Diego (UCSD) conducted a two-year statewide study in California. The study goal was to assess the acceptance and utilization levels, barriers and enabling factors, outcomes, and policy and legal provisions related to VDOT as well as other applications of the technology. Background information about VDOT as well as the study methods and findings are presented in this article.

Reimbursement for telehealth is unfortunately complicated and the policy environment is in constant flux.  In addition to self-pay, Medicare, Medicaid and many private payers offer some form of reimbursement for telehealth delivered services .  However, policies vary by both state and payer.  This fact sheet summarizes some of the current telehealth reimbursement issues.

Timely access to specialty care is a serious issue, particularly for California’s rural and underserved populations.  With 3.4 million newly insured, this issue has worsened. The use of electronically delivered services is one way to help alleviate demand and improve quality.
